Vienna is a beautiful city, but for the cyclists of the Chainreaction Bike Convoy, Austria’s capital showed its unwelcoming side this morning. Battling rain and wind, many of the athletes set off on their 250-kilometre stage before 7 a.m., and the bad weather persisted throughout the day.
The two ambulance vehicles in the convoy offered a little recharge: as supply vehicles, they provided the riders with bars and gels and helped with tools for minor repairs to the bikes. The stopover was urgently needed as the weather continued to deteriorate.
In the Czech town of Přerov, the cyclists spent the night in a school. The ambulance staff surprised the cold and hungry athletes with a large portion of pasta in tomato sauce.
The otherwise good mood was overshadowed by sad news from Bamberg: Marc Peratoner, editor of the local radio station Radio Bamberg, passed away at the age of 61. His radio network praised him as a ‘role model of commitment, will and ability’. The activists from Bamberg:UA can also confirm this: Peratoner was always ready when he invited the association to press interviews, reported on the aid campaigns with great enthusiasm, and acted as the host at charity events.
