A group of enthusiastic cyclists will accompany 14 ambulances on their way to Lviv.
The Chainreaction Bikeconvoy for Ukraine started this Saturday morning at the Theresienwiese in Munich (shown in the photo). The route, which is around 1400 kilometres long, runs through Passau, Linz, Vienna and Krakow to Przemyśl at the Polish/Ukrainian border. The route is divided into stages of around 200 kilometres each. Two of the ambulances serve as supply vehicles, while the others head to the next destination on the route. On the tour, the cycling enthusiasts climb more than 7,000 metres in elevation. Forty-five of the sixty-five riders also want to ride the last 100 kilometres from Przemyśl to Lviv.
The fourteen ambulances, including two rescue vehicles, will be handed over to the Ukrainian Territorial Defence Forces there. The tasks of these units include the evacuation of injured civilians and soldiers from combat zones. Before their return journey, the guests from Germany will visit a rehabilitation centre for the wounded and a cemetery for soldiers who died in the fighting against the Russian invasion.
The Chainreaction Bikeconvoy for Ukraine is an initiative by individual cyclists in cooperation with Bamberg:UA, which funded the ambulances through donations.
